Fixing these issues either requires the deletion of the existing OST file or resynchronization of Outlook with Exchange server or OST Recovery Software. Before deleting the OST file from Outlook, it is recommended to take updated backup. The deletion of an OST file leads to the loss of all the changes that were made offline. A new OST file is created after synchronizing Outlook with the Exchange server. But this could also lead to data loss. Steps Involved in Deleting an OST File from Outlook

If you are aware of the location, it is easy to delete an OST file. You just need to simply locate the Outlook folder and choose the OST file and delete it. The problem occurs when you do not know the location of the file. In such a case following steps are required –

  1. If Outlook is running, quit it
  2. Go to Run Window
  3. Type %LOCALAPPDATA%\Microsoft\Outlook\ in the Run Window and press OK. This command will automatically locate the OST file.
  4. Choose the OST file and either right-click on the file to select the delete option or simply just press the delete key.

Steps Involved in Recreating OST File in Outlook

When you have successfully deleted the OST file, you are required to recreate the OST file to make the Outlook function properly. Following are the steps involved in creating an OST file in Outlook 2013, 2010, and 2007 –

  1. If you are using Outlook 2007, open the Tools menu. When you are using Outlook 2010, 2013, and 2016, simply hit on the File tab and then click on Info.
  2. You are now required to click on Account Setting and then double click on Microsoft Exchange.
  3. Setting pop-up will be displayed, hit on the More Setting button.
  4. Now click on the Advance tab and press Offline Folder File Setting. If you are using outlook 2013, click on Offline Data File Setting.
  5. Now give the path to save OST file and press OK. The default name for an OST file is Outlook.ost.
  6. Finally, click OK and finish.

Recreating OST File in Outlook 2003/2000

If you want to create an OST file in Outlook 2003 and 2000, just follow the following steps and synchronize Outlook with Microsoft Exchange Server –

  1. Open Outlook and look for the Tools menu and then click on the E-mail account.
  2. Now click on View or Change Existing Mail Account and click Next.
  3. Establish the Outlook Process Email for the Account in the next Order Box and click on Microsoft Exchange Server and then Change.
  4. Now hit the More Setting option.
  5. Choose the Advance tab from the menu and press Offline Folder File Settings.
  6. In File Box mention the path where you want to save the OST file and click OK.
  7. The default name of the OST file is Outlook.ost.
  8. After that, an error message will be displayed. Just click OK.
  9. Finally, click Next and then Finish.
