Every computer expert recommends protecting any kind of document with a password. The real problem arises when we forgot excel password and are unable to open the sheet when required urgently. A password-protected computer is important to keep it safe from hackers and intruders who may steal the information from the documents. Mostly excel sheets are used to generate a database that stores the most valuable information related to any aspect. For this sole reason, the users should password-protect them.

Excel sheets are documents that are stored in database format, so resetting its password is not alike that of resetting the password of email or computer. In this article, we will be talking about how you can open a password protected excel sheet so as to regain access to your document and retrieve its data.

Method 1 – Opening Protected Excel by Changing the File Extension

This method perfectly works with Microsoft Office 2010 or previous versions but may or may not work with the most recent Microsoft Office versions. If you are using the old version of Microsoft Office, apply the following steps to unlock your excel file –

  1. Generate a backup of your password protected excel file
  2. Right-click on that sheet and press the rename button
  3. Modify the file extensions to ‘.zip’ from ‘.csv’ or ‘.xls’
  4. Now unzip the content from the zip file
  5. Search for the file that ends with ‘.xml’ format
  6. Double click on that file and open it with an XML editor
  7. Press ‘Ctrl + F’ and look for the word ‘Sheet Protection”. Look for the particular line that starts with ‘<sheetProtectionalgorithmName=”SHA-512”hashValue=’.Remove that specific word from the file and save it
  8. Lastly, change the ‘.zip’ file to ‘.csv’, or ‘.xls’ and press enter.

  • Works with only MS Office 2007 or older versions
